An investment fund that is owned and operated by a national government is known as a Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF). The goal of the fund is to manage the financial reserves of the country. It is usually developed through export collections on commodities, like oil, natural gas, minerals, and other sources, including foreign exchange reserves.

Many countries have these types of funds around the world, but some of the funds are more well-funded than others. In this article, we will learn more about the different countries and what their stats are when it comes to their SWF. Each country is ranked based on its AuM, which means Asset Under Management. That is a term that represents the total dollar value of the combined assets that belong to the fund.

The country with the highest sovereign wealth fund is the United States. Currently, the country's total AuM is $10,864. No other country in the world has a value of even half this amount. The closest country to the US is China, which has an AuM of 3,492. The United Arab Emirates with $1,939, Japan with $1,817, and Canada with $1,657 follow to round out the top five.

Norway is next on the list of countries with a high AuM number. The AuM of Norway is $1,502, which is just slightly higher than Singapore's $1,365. Australis, Saudi Arabia, and the Netherlands all have similar AuMs with $1,157, $1,146, and $1,142, respectively. All other countries on the list have AuMs of less than $1,000.

Some examples of these countries that are in the middle tier include South Korea with $969 and Kuwait with $909. At this point, the total AuMs begin to fall rapidly for countries further on the list. For example, Qatar is next on the list, but the country has a total AuM of 465. Malaysia and Denmark follow with $370 and $343, respectively.

In fact, some countries have such a low AuM number, that their overall AuM is currently zero. Those countries include Nauru, Cape Verde, Guyana, Djibouti, Bolivia, Senegal, Mozambique, Algeria, and Bangladesh. There are also several countries that just barely register to be included on the list, but that still have less than $10 for their AuMs. Those countries include Kiribati, Cyprus, Armenia, Panama, Palestine, Turkmenistan, Mauritius, Gabon, Belgium Rwanda, Vietnam, Egypt, Malta, Tunisia, Angola, Colombia, Mongolia, Ghana, Peru, Monaco, Mexico, Greece, Namibia, and Botswana.

  • Whereas SWF are often operated by developing countries in emerging markets (as well as by autocratic regimes), PPFs are usually operated by developed, democratic countries.
