German Population by State 2024

German Americans are a significant demographic in many states, with Wisconsin having the highest percentage of individuals who identify as German at 37.1%. Other Midwestern states also have large populations of German Americans, including North Dakota (35.8%), South Dakota (33.2%), Iowa (31.6%), and Nebraska (31.5%). In addition, Minnesota (30.4%) has a substantial German American population, as does Pennsylvania (22.4%), where over 2.8 million people report having German ancestry.

In other regions of the United States, German Americans are also present, albeit with lower percentages. For example, California has the largest number of German Americans with over 2.7 million individuals reporting German ancestry, but they make up only 7.1% of the state's population. Similarly, Texas has over 2.4 million individuals with German ancestry, representing 7.9% of the state's population. However, states like Mississippi (4.9%), Rhode Island (4.9%), and Hawaii (5.8%) have comparatively smaller German American populations.
