Scottish Population by State 2024

Scottish Population by State 2024

Scottish Americans are found throughout the United States, with some states having a higher percentage of individuals with Scottish ancestry than others. The state with the highest percentage of Scottish Americans is Maine at 4.16%, followed closely by Vermont at 4.04% and New Hampshire at 3.88%. The lowest percentages of Scottish Americans are found in Hawaii at 0.97%, New Jersey at 0.91%, and New York at 0.99%.

Overall, the data suggests that there is a relatively even distribution of Scottish Americans across the country, with most states falling within the range of 1-2% Scottish American. However, there are pockets of higher concentration in some northeastern states, as well as in states in the western part of the country like Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho. It is important to note that these percentages only reflect those who self-identify as having Scottish ancestry and may not account for individuals who have mixed ancestry or are unaware of their heritage.

Scottish Heritage by the Numbers

In terms of raw numbers, California has the most Scottish-descendent citizens, with 456,714. Texas is not too far behind with 375,541 Scottish-American citizens. Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, and Michigan all have between 200,000 and 300,000 Scottish Americans living within the state.

North Dakota has the fewest Scottish-American residents, with only 8,504. The District of Columbia, South Dakota, Hawaii, and Delaware all have less than 15,000 residents of Scottish descent.
