Cambodia Overview

The largest city in Cambodia is Phnom Penh, with a population of 2,542,893 people.

Cambodia’s capital and largest city is Phnom Penh, which is situated at the junction of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. Phnom Penh functions as the economic, cultural and political center of Cambodia, and this is reflected in its large population of over 2.5M residents. Phnom Penh was known as the ‘Pearl of Asia’ for its beautiful architecture, and it still retains some of the colonial buildings built by the French, including the city’s central market, Phsar Thom Thmei, an impressive art deco-style landmark that remains open today.

The northwestern city of Battambang is one of Cambodia’s largest cities, with 145K residents. Battambang is the capital of Battambang Province and is located on the Sangkae River, which runs through the province. Battambang Province is also home to the Laang Spean cave, which contains many historical artifacts.
