- Precious metals are often measured in “troy ounces”, a unit of measurement equal to 31.1034768 grams, roughly 10% heavier than a standard ounce (28.349 grams). This can create confusion, as many sources use the term “ounces” without clearly designating which form of the ounce is in use. As a rule, it can generally be assumed that troy ounces are in use.
