Angola Overview

Angola has 2 cities with more than a million people, 8 cities with between 100,000 and 1 million people, and 20 cities with between 10,000 and 100,000 people. The largest city in Angola is Luanda, with a population of 10,027,900 people.

The African country of Angola is the seventh-largest country on the continent, and is home to a population of almost 26 million. Around 2.5 million people live in the capital city of Luanda, which functions as the country’s main port due to its location on the Atlantic coast, as well as its economic and cultural center. Angola’s history as a Portuguese colony is still apparent in the fact that Portuguese remains the official language in the country, and Luanda is the world’s third most populous Portuguese-speaking city.

The other main cities in Angola are significantly smaller than Luanda. Huambo is the second-largest city in the country, with a population of 226,177, closely followed by Lobito with 207,957 residents. Huambo is located in the central highlands of the country near the Kunene River, while Lobito is situated along the Atlantic coast and is the main hub of the Benguela Railway, which runs from Lobito to the eastern side of the country, and provides access to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. Other key Angolan cities include Benguela, with a population of 151,235 and Lucapa, which has approximately 125,000 residents.
