Taiwan Overview

The largest city in Taiwan is New Taipei, with a population of 4,056,148 people.

Taiwan is a country that has a very diverse population spread across over 35,000 square kilometers. Like the world’s other largest countries, Taiwan’s population is spread among its various cities and towns, with many of its residents living within its urban cities. Taiwan has a total of 23 cities. While this doesn’t seem like many when compared to other countries, many of its cities have extremely large populations that contribute to the country’s status as one of the most populous in the world. The 23 different cities are divided into administrative divisions. The three divisions are Special Municipality, Provincial City and County-Controlled City.

Over the years, the country’s rural population has declined as natives and immigrants are choosing to move to the bigger cities as they become more developed and industrialized. As early as 1989, the rural population of Taiwan accounted for less than 25% of the country’s total population. The urban population now accounts for more than three-quarters of the total population, with many residents moving to the three biggest urban areas in the country: Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung.
