At the height of the slave trade (1700-1807), at least 500,000 African people were sent from Bristol to slavery in America.
The city struggled to keep pace with other manufacturing centers after the war with France and the abolition of slavery. Still, the city’s population quintupled during the 19th century. By 1901, over 330,000 people called Bristol home, and it continued steady growth into the 20th century.
